ʻŌHIʻA LOVE FEST

Save the date(s)! ʻŌhiʻa Love Festival is coming to your island this November. This is a very special event, to honor ʻŌhiʻa, and learn the latest research about the disease that is threatening them. 

This year our theme is : Ka 'Upena O Ke Ola- the net of life. LIfe from mauka to makai is inconnected, like a big net, many of Hawaiʻi's native and endemic species are dependent upon ʻŌhiʻa lehua, for food, water, and shelter.

The design was created was and donated by local artist and conservationist, Kimberly DeSouza.

Come show your ʻŌhiʻa Love and learn more about this important keystone species that supports life.

This event is brought to you by the University of Hawaiʻi, the Department of Land and Natural Resources - Division of Forestry and Wildlife, and your local Invasive Species Committees.

On Saturday, November 4^th come and join us for the kickoff to the ʽŌhiʽa Love Fest on Maui.  Look for the Hale ʽŌhiʽa at the Maui Nui Botanical Garden’s (MNBG) annual Arbor Day Expo celebration.  There you can learn about harvesting seeds and if you learn five things from all over the gardens about ʻōhiʻa completing your passport, you earn a free ʻōhiʻa tree! MNBG will also be giving away an additional 2,000+ native trees, one per person, any age welcome. MNBG in partnership with Hawaiian Electric, Maui Association of Landscape Professionals (MALP), and Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program. The MALP Garden Expo will feature horticultural and tree care classes, a plant sale, and free activities.

We are hosting the East Hawaiʻi Island ʻŌhiʻa Love Festival at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at our Komohana Research Extension Center, located at 875 Komohana Street in Hilo on the far SW corner of the UH Hilo campus. 

Come join us 9am to 3pm, Arbor Day, Saturday, November 4th to learn about Ka ʻUpena O Ke Ola, a metaphor for how life is interconnected like a big fishing net, mauka to makai, and ʻŌhiʻa is a keystone species that holds it all together. Sign up for a tour of the native plant garden, sit in a presentation about the latest research from one of the ROD Squad scientists, learn how to draw a honeycreeper, find out how beetles and ungulates (hooved animals) help spread Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD), win prizes and collect new stickers, you can even get a selfie with our mascot, RODney, and many more fun, educational activities for all ages. Come out to celebrate ʻŌhiʻa Love and learn what you can do to help stop the spread of ROD and protect Hawaiʻiʻs keystone species, ʻŌhiʻa,  for the future.

Come and join us for ‛Ōhi‛a Love Fest on O‛ahu! The festival will be held at the Honolulu Zoo on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 10:00am – 2:00pm. The festival will be located near the African Savanna exclosures, playground, and picnic lawn! Come and join us for a fun-filled family event at the Zoo. Although the ‛Ōhi‛a Love Fest is a FREE event, the festival is located on Zoo grounds; therefore, you will still need to pay an entrance fee. The fee will cover your day at the Zoo as well as The ‛Ōhi‛a Love Fest!

We are teaming up with Terraformation this year for ʻŌhiʻa Love Festival on the West side! It will be held at the Ridge to Reef Restoration Center at 73-4485 Kahilihili, near the Kona airport.
